Idris had been summoned to address the Senate on the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye by the police over alleged gun-running; and the spate of killings by armed herdsmen and militias across the country.

Idris in a statement via police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, on Wednesday, May 9, accused the Senate of trying to blackmail him.

For three times, the police boss was invited by the Senate for "security briefing" and for the three times, he ignored the invitation.

The Senate yesterday passed a vote of no confidence on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, for his refusal to appear before it for the third time.

Moshood added that the I.G and the Nigeria Police Force at large would not be discouraged by any form of blackmail from anyone irrespective of their status from the enforcement of Law and Order.

The Nigeria police have vowed to challenge Senate's declaration of their boss, Ibrahim Idris, as unfit to hold public office in the country and overseas in court.

The police described the Senate resolution against Idris as "a deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting with mischievous motives to hand-twist the IGP to pervert the end of justice" in a felonious and serious offenses of criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms for which Senator Dino Melaye was allegedly indicted by two principal suspects, Kabiru Seidu aka Osama and Nuhu Salisu aka Small. Melaye's arrest has been overtaken by events.

He also said on May 2, the senate had refused to accord some senior officers delegated to represent the I-G when he was on an official duty to Birnin-Gwari area of Kaduna state.

Part of the statement reads, "The Senate said the crux of the matter that informed the invitation is the ceaseless spate of killings across the country and that matters concerning the arrest of Senator Melaye has in fact been overtaken by events".

After the session, Senate President Bukola Saraki said, The Senate noted his non-appearance as disrespectful to the institution and constitutional authority. The courts are already handling the related cases.

But at Wednesday's plenary, IGP Idris was a no-show, rather sent an Assistant Inspector General of Police to represent him. No matter whose Ox is gored.

"The Senate also notes that his earlier refusal to appear before its investigative committee was overruled by a court of competent jurisdiction just in April".

"Therefore, the Senate resolved to declare the IG as an enemy of our democracy and not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria".

"The primary responsibility of the police is maintenance of law and order as well as protection of lives and property".
