Using rats and cell cultures, the researchers examined how their metabolic profiles were altered by each type of sweetener. And why not? They seemed like the ideal alternative to sugar, offering zero calories and supposedly helping people avoid diseases associated with the overconsumption of sugar.
"Despite the addition of these non-caloric artificial sweeteners to our everyday diets, there has still been a drastic rise in obesity and diabetes", Hoffman said in a press release.
Hoffman will present the research at Experimental Biology 2018 in San Diego today.
Although many people think diet soda is a healthier option than other sugary drinks, a new study has found that having beverages using artificial sweeteners can still lead to diabetes and obesity. "However, it was not until recently that the negative impact of consuming non-caloric artificial sweeteners in the place of sugar had been increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to the dramatic increase in diabetes and obesity, along with the associated complications".
The main problem with artificial sweeteners is the fact that they might not help people lose weight at all, and that they might even contribute to weight gain.
Increasingly, studies are being published that reject artificial sweeteners' whiter-than-white image.

Described as "the largest examination to date that tracks biochemical changes in the body", the study compared the biological effects of diets high in glucose versus aspartame or acesulfame potassium-common artificial sweeteners-in rats. They both change the blood vessels and blood, but artificial sweeteners also changed the rats' metabolism. Following three weeks, the specialists saw noteworthy contrasts in the concentration of amino acids, fats, and biochemicals in blood tests.
"We observed that in moderation, your body has the machinery to handle sugar; it is when the system is overloaded over a long period of time that this machinery breaks down", Hoffmann explained.
"Overuse or excessive use of any products-including sugar or sweeteners-is not beneficial to health", Pigott said.
Researchers found that artificial sweeteners change how the body forms fat and gets energy. But, of course, when it comes to our internal chemistry, nothing is that clear cut.
The study showed that both sugar and artificial sweeteners can be harmful to the body, but more research is needed, the researchers said. "If you chronically consume these foreign substances [as with sugar] the risk of negative health outcomes increases".
Once again, it seems that moderation is the best course of action.
