External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is in China on a four-day tour.

It would also give an opportunity to Modi and Xi to chart a course for the future as they negotiate old and new differences.

"We will make sure that the informal summit (between PM Modi and President Jinping on April 27-28) will be a complete success and a milestone in China-India relations", Wang Yi said. The talks later this month will be part of an informal summit aimed at improving bilateral ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said after talks with visiting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. "We will work closely with the Chinese leadership to take India-China cooperation to new heights", she said.

A host of issues, including regional security and terrorism, would be discussed at the meeting which is a preparatory meet ahead of the SCO summit to be held in the Chinese city of Qingdao in June with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also scheduled to take part in it. "It is against this backdrop that President Xi and Prime Minister Modi have made a decision to hold the informal summit", the Chinese Foreign Minister said. Following the Dokalam standoff past year, both countries increased their dialogue to scale down tensions and improve their relations with talks at various levels.

It was followed by two meetings between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi and the visit early this year by Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale to Beijing.

India was an "observer" in the grouping since 2005 and was made full member along with Pakistan previous year.

After the 73-day military stand-off at Doklam in 2017, China and India have tried to mend their ties, which is evident from the stepped up bilateral exchanges and high-level visits.
