According to multiple reports, Woolworths supermarkets around Australia are experiencing a technical issue that prevents them from processing any transactions.

ZDNet understands the glitch didn't make its way to all stores, however, with some operating as usual.

A NATIONAL technical outage halted trading at Woolworths stores, causing chaos for shoppers as their trolleys bank up and some stores closed.

The supermarket's social media team responded to the complaints on Twitter by saying IT issues occurred. The registers are now back online in all our stores. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused". "Thanks", the reply to many reads.

Social media posts have revealed shoppers are banked up in stores with their trolleys, unable to move. I just spent 45 minutes shopping with 3 kids and your registers go down and you tell me (quite rudely) that I need to leave the store without my groceries.

"Registers are offline so customers are standing in queues with baskets of food that they can't buy", she said.

Shortly after 4pm, the issue began affecting all registers across the country.

The ABC reached out to Woolworths for comment.
