UK government apologises for 'appalling' treatment of Caribbean immigrants

The row has been brewing for some months but has erupted just as leaders of the 53 Commonwealth countries gather in London for their biennial heads of government meeting.

Prime Minister Theresa May's office said she would meet with her Caribbean counterparts at the Commonwealth summit to discuss the situation.

"[But] in today's politically-polarised climate, it is important to understand more about the psychological processes behind nationalistic and social attitudes if we are to build bridges between communities".

Those arriving in the United Kingdom between 1948 and 1971 from Caribbean countries have been labelled the Windrush generation after the name of one of the ships which brought workers from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other islands to the United Kingdom to help with labour shortages.

But some from that generation, now aging residents in Britain, say that in recent months they have been denied medical treatment or threatened with deportation because they can't produce papers to prove it.

He became naturalised in 1971 and so has the official paperwork to stay in the country, as do his family members, but he and Norfolk Black History Month are campaigning to support those members of the Windrush generation who do not find themselves in such a fortunate position.

"With its unique scope and global voice, such a Commonwealth can set a powerful example to the world, one that demonstrates and underlines the importance of protecting free trade and the rules-based worldwide order", she said. The government said it is checking to see whether anyone has been deported from Britain in error.

Expect wet, windy weather for the north valley's Monday

Participants in the study were asked whether they agreed with the statement - originally made by Prime Minister Theresa May - that "a citizen of the world is a citizen of nowhere" and opposed the statement "the government has a right to remain in the European Union if the costs are too high".

Ireland is excluded from the figures because of what the ONS describes as the "complex" status of Irish and British citizenships, including many dual nationals and an unknown number of people who have rights to citizenship in both countries but have not yet exercised one of them.

Some 119,400 British citizens aged 65 or over are estimated to be living in Spain - 15% of all British people who have made their home in another mainland European Union country.

"It is a stain on our nation's conscience", he said, adding that the prime minister's decision to call a meeting was only a "small" concession.

Despite keeping rates on hold, the committee said that "ongoing tightening of monetary policy" would be needed to bring inflation back to the Bank's 2% target.

However, she said she did not believe anyone had actually been deported, although there have been media reports of people who were only saved by the last-minute intervention of lawyers. "As Caribbean leaders we have to accept that in good faith".
