North and South Korea to officially end war after 65 years, new report says War Between North, South Korea May Finally End At Upcoming Summit

North and South Korea are set to finally declare an end to the Korean War, almost 70 years after it began.

Some of the issues that would have to be tackled include the hundreds of thousands of troops along one the most heavily fortified borders in the world; submarines and ships patrolling on both coasts; South Korea's active military alliance with the U.S; the hosting of US forces; and North Korean artillery pointed at Seoul.

The news comes from an unnamed South Korea official who said the countries have been in negotiations around the matter in advance of the summit.

The meeting between Kim and Moon, the third inter-Korean summit, will likely pave the way for talks between Kim and President Donald Trump in May or June.

"Even though our special envoys confirmed his denuclearization will, it is entirely different if the two leaders confirm it directly among themselves and put that into text", Im said. It conducted its most powerful nuclear test previous year and has sought to develop a missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland. They note North Korea has long said that "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" should also include the withdrawal of the 28,500 USA troops in South Korea and a halt to annual U.S.

Peace between North and South Korea could even turn the DMZ back into a more traditional border.

UN Security Council sanctions imposed since North Korea's first nuclear test in 2006 and strengthened over the past decade aim to cut North Korea off from worldwide trade.

A face-to-face between the two leaders is slated to take place next month. The two sides reached an armistice to end hostilities in 1953, but there was never a peace treaty.

It's unclear at this time when they will hold their first conversation, but Moon's chief of staff Im Jong-seok says it's possible they may speak together on the phone this Friday, according to Bloomberg.

According to the report, a South Korean official told the publication that South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may release a joint statement at their joint summit next week announcing an end to the conflict. The United States stations 28,500 troops in South Korea as a legacy of the conflict.
