A 13-year-old boy and an amateur archaeologist have unearthed a "significant" treasure trove in Germany which may have belonged to the legendary Danish king Harald Bluetooth who brought Christianity to Denmark.

Only on closer inspection did they realize it was silver, German national news agency DPA reported. Archaeologists believe the riches belonged to the Danish king Harald Gormsson, more commonly known as "Bluetooth", who ruled from about A.D.

The entire treasure was uncovered by experts last weekend, the Mecklenburg-West Pomerania state archaeology office said.

On the East German island of rügen in the Baltic sea were found hundreds of silver coins, rings, pearls and bracelets. Rene Schoen and his student Luca Malaschnitschenko were looking for treasure using metal detectors in January on northern Ruegen island when they chanced upon what they initially thought was a worthless piece of aluminium.

The state archaeology office became involved and the amateur archeologists were asked to keep the find a secret until professionals could plan the major dig.

More than 100 of the coins have Christian crosses on them and are believed to have been minted in the kingdom of Bluetooth.

The coins found allowed the archaeologists to date the find to the time Bluetooth would have been in the area.

"We have here the rare case of a discovery that appears to corroborate historical sources", archaeologist Detlef Jantzen said. That was three months ago, and now archaeologists have excavated an area covering 400 square metres (4,300 square feet), unearthing much more treasure. Back in 2015, a man discovered Roman-era coins, mosaic glassware, and hobnails from a pair of shoes and last year, four 2,000 year gold torques were unearthed in England.

Harald Bluetooth, which introduced Christianity to Denmark in the tenth century, is an important historical figure in Northern Europe.

Bluetooth technology was named after him, for his purported networking and communication skills.
