Maple Leafs beat Bruins 4-2 to cut playoff series deficit to 2-1
17 April, 2018, 20:35
I give credit to the Maple Leafs. With AP Photos.Auston Matthews scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, Patrick Marleau had two goals, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.
"For sure and that's why we've made the decision to do what we're doing", Babcock said of Plekanec's old reputation as a Bruin killer. They guessed and you can review those, although we couldn't with that one. "Maybe just (because of) the fact that he didn't feel as important as he should have when he got here".
James van Riemsdyk also scored for Toronto. Each of those four had their moments in Game 3 after largely being suppressed back in Beantown. MacKinnon's second of the game early in the second period stood as the game-winner. It was the type of goal that has defined Matthews in his young career with a nose for the net and a quick release in traffic. He got shots on net early and often and it paid dividends for him in this one.
You can't win them all.
A big surprise to some, Tomas Plekanec was promoted to play with Patrick Marleau and Mitch Marner made an impact, as they did not look overwhelmed against the Bruins' top line.
With the series shifting to Air Canada Centre, a push from the Leafs was expected early and the hosts did have it early on.
As the hits and saves against the Bruins' best players piled up, the Maple Leafs managed to produce just enough offense in support of their efforts in other areas. Let us know in the comment section below.
Matthews couldn't veil his frustration after Game 2 when he was asked if he could have possibly imagined being without a point over a two-game span that saw his direct competition - Boston's No. 1 line of Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak - combine for 20 themselves.
Scientists engineer plastic-eating enzyme
Our plastic pollution crisis is only getting worse, but scientists may soon have a valuable new tool to chip away at the problem. The researchers are now working on improving the enzyme so it can be used to break down plastics in an industrial setting.
But on Monday they were held off the scoresheet, even though they had their chances.
Now you can't be blamed if you didn't see it coming - the Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak troika looked like a juggernaut in those first two games. One day you have a great day next morning you wake up and it's an absolutely (crappy) day. This, of course, compared to Matthews seeing Bergeron for a combined 12:49 of his 27:32 in Games 1 and 2 in Boston made an obvious difference. Marleau said. "We didn't (play) our best in Boston and that changed tonight".
"At this time of the year, we've talked a lot about this in our room, it's great to have skill but without will, nothing happens".
Game 4 is Wednesday in Denver.
- The Leafs opened the scoring on a first-period power play, which was a good omen for them. Jake Gardiner, who was downright disastrous in the opening two games of this series, came through with a noticeably stronger performance. It's called delay of game, but trust me, nobody is sending a puck over the glass to delay anything.
Now who's questioning his give-a-crap metre? And after over 154 minutes of being stymied in these playoffs, Matthews was left free to use his speed and skill to generate some of the offence Toronto had been lacking with a vintage scoring play teed up between him and linemate William Nylander. "I didn't think it was".
Andersen stopped 40 of 42 shots for a.952 save percentage in Game 3. And in the attacking zone the Bruins might want to shoot for rebounds rather than always trying to beat Andersen with the ideal shot because he proved that his Game 2 disaster was a fluke and his Hart Trophy-worthy regular season was not.
Avalanche 5, Predators 3:Nathan MacKinnon scored twice, including one as part of a three-goal first period and another to chase Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne from the game, and Colorado pulled to 2-1 in the first-round series in Denver. Marchand was on the ice for all three of the Leafs' even-strength goals and Bergeron and Pastrnak for two. If the Bruins had one calling card during the regular season, though, it was their ability to prevent negativity from carrying over from one game to the next. Ryan Johansen had a second-period goal and Colton Sissons scored another in the third to make it 4-2. Both were handed minors.
