The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is set to meet on Monday, as inspectors in Syria begin their probe into the Douma attack. Now Russia will pay an economic price for backing Assad in the form of more economic sanctions, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley said Sunday. "We are being threatened".

Mr Corbyn warned of an escalation in a "proxy war" between the U.S. and Russian Federation. Syrian air defenses hit several incoming missiles, state-run media said.

The intervention "is not going to turn the tide of the conflict", he said, adding that it was about stopping the erosion of the "taboo" of chemical weapons.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Soviet-made S-125, S-200, Buk, Kvadrat and Osa systems, used by the Syrian military, intercepted 71 out of the 103 missiles fired by the USA and its allies. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said the United States military had kept its strikes limited because it knew a wider attack would spark retaliation from Damascus and its allies and inflame the region.

The strikes were a response to the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons on April 7 in Douma, Syria, which killed 42 civilians - many of them children - and wounded over 500 others.

Jens Stoltenberg said the strikes were a "clear message" to Syrian President Bashar Assad, to Russian Federation and Iran that the use of chemical weapons is not acceptable and that the allies would not stand by and watch.

Russian Federation denounced the attacks as aggression against its ally, but there was no sign of an immediate military response.

AMERICA, Britain and France fired a barrage of missiles at targets inside Syria on April 14th.

Iran joined Russian Federation in condemning the strikes.

The military strike in Syria that drew a gleeful "Mission Accomplished" from President Trump on Twitter is not exacting the same elation from some Middle East experts who see a long, hard climb to peace in the war-weary Muslim nation.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, right, shakes hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting at the Saadabad Palace in Tehran, Iran, November 1, 2017.

The Security Council held an emergency meeting earlier at the request of Russian Federation, which failed in a bid to condemn the air strikes.

Mr Corbyn called for a War Powers Act to make it necessary for MPs to approve future British military action, with the Opposition leader criticising Theresa May's decision to carry out the strikes without parliamentary approval.

"We have absorbed the strike", the official told Reuters.

President Trump said Saturday morning airstrikes in Syria overnight were "perfectly executed", hours after he announced the US, United Kingdom and France launched precision missile strikes in Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria last weekend.

The US-led strike was launched even though the OPCW fact-finding team was due to head to Douma on Saturday. That makes degrading it through military strikes far more hard.

While President Donald Trump praised his military for a successful operation tweeting "Mission Accomplished", the Pentagon was quick to retort, that "this operation does not represent a change in USA policy", and that it was not an attempt to dethrone Assad or be involved in the Syrian civil war.
