The multi-Grammy award-winning artist is the first to win the prestigious award from a non-classical or jazz category. In addition to topping many year-end best lists, DAMN was awarded five Grammys, one of it was the Best Rap Album, though it lost out on album of the year to Bruno Mars' 24K Magic.

In announcing the journalism prizes, Pulitzer administrator Dana Canedy said the winners "uphold the highest goal of a free and independent press, even in the most trying of times".

Established in 1917 by provisions in the will of the Hungarian-born American Joseph Pulitzer who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, it is administered by Columbia University in New York City yearly. The closest precedent to Lamar's win came in 2008 when Bob Dylan received an honorary Pulitzer.

The artist was picked for the award above Michael Gilbertson's Quartet, which follows the more traditional format of the string quartet, and Ted Hearne's Sound from the Bench, a work that mixes chamber choir music with more contemporary instrumental elements.

But the album failed to win the top Grammy prize - album of the year - in what was seen as a snub by music industry voters for the rap genre despite its rising popularity.
