If early analysis holds up, this event could have been the closest encounter by an asteroid of this size since 1930.

The asteroid, labelled Asteroid 2018 GE3, was closest to Earth around 2:41am ET on April 15 and was estimated to be up to 110 metres wide.

NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) estimated the size at between 131 and 328 feet.

Prof Fitzsimmons said: "It is important to know that scientists and engineers have made great strides in detecting Near-Earth Asteroids and understanding the threat posed by them". This asteroid is known as 2018 GE3 which was just 119,500 miles away from the Earth's atmosphere.

2018 GE3 was first discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey which is approaching Earth on April 14.

Five years ago, the 10,000-ton, 56-foot Chelyabinsk meteor exploded over Russian Federation with the force of 30 atomic bombs.

Andrew Cheng, who led the NASA mission during the year 2000-2001 told Fox News that "It doesn't take a very large object". The asteroid which flies past the earth has a speed about 66,000 miles per hour but the speed will have broken down once the asteroid enters the Earth's atmosphere.

"However, some of an asteroid this size might have gotten through to Earth's surface, and an asteroid this big is capable of causing some regional damage, depending on various factors such as composition, speed, entry angle, and location of impact".

According to Nasa, that asteroid generated a shock wave that blew out windows over 500sq km. It has since been labeled 2018 GE3 and it passed by the planet at close range mere hours after detection.
