Apple To Launch A Subscription-Based News Service Within Next Year

Apple Will Reportedly Launch a Paid News Subscription Service in the Next Year Apple reportedly planning paid news subscription service

Last month, Apple announced it acquired the digital magazine distributor Texture as an entry to the journalism world.

Just over a month after Apple acquired digital magazine app Texture, Bloomberg reports that the company is planning to integrate the service into Apple News and launch its own premium news subscription service. A fresh report published today says that Apple is going to take Texture, and absorb it into a revised Apple News to create a premium subscription service. The latter is widely known as the "Netflix of magazine publishing" since it allows subscribers to choose among 200 magazines to read for $9.99 a month. The service will reportedly be integrated in the updated version of the Apple News app, which is believed to launch sometime in 2019. It is only available in three markets: US, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, speaks during an even last month introducing a low-priced iPad geared toward students. This will be a similar service as major companies will be offering content based on subscriptions. Apple once had an app called Newsstand that combined several magazines and newspapers, providing subscriptions for individual outlets. Back in 2014, the company bought Beats and the Beats Music service that had less than a million subscribers at the time.

You might pay Apple every month for music or iCloud storage, but would you pay it for news?

Paid subscriptions already play a huge part in Apple's ecosystem. Apple also gets a 15 percent cut from the subscription revenues that are being sold by third-party apps through the App Store, as pointed out by TechCrunch. Texture previously had about 100 staff members.

Apple News made its way to iPhone and iPad with the launch of iOS 10. However, it's likely that the company will use its current Apple News relationships to its advantage, as well as those that Texture brought into the mix (titles available on Texture included People, Rolling Stone, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and others).
