UN Council Rejects Russia Resolution on Syria

'Not About Regime Change': Theresa May Claims Syria Strikes are Successful and Legal If Syria uses toxic gas again, US 'locked and loaded': UN envoy
Ellis Copeland | 16 April, 2018, 03:41

The strikes on Syria were launched at 9 p.m. ET Friday, the early hours of Saturday morning for Europe and the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump declared it was "mission accomplished" after the United States, British and French forces struck Syria yesterday with more than 100 missiles in the first coordinated Western attack against the Damascus government. Could not have had a better result.

"A perfectly executed strike last night", he wrote.

Following the strikes, Russian Federation called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the operation. Inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons were due to visit Douma yesterday to inspect the site of the suspected gas attack.

Syrian state TV broadcast images of the destruction at the site, including piles of rubble and a burnt vehicle.

"Initial assessments are that this target was destroyed", he said.

Officials would not describe Trump's decision-making process in much detail or the options presented, but they did say there were week-long deliberations.

The U.K. -based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the Syrian war through activists on the ground, said the strikes had also targeted positions of elite Republican Guard forces. In a calculated show of defiance, the presidency posted a video showing Mr Assad apparently turning up for work following the attacks. President Trump's determination and Israel's support remain as they were.

Russian Federation and Syria claim the attack was fabricated.

"We are not scared of America's missiles". "Again, now, it's the anniversary of the last chemical attack... and we thought, probably, hopefully this time will be different, it will be a serious one compared to previous year".

Russia, Iran and China all condemned the attacks.

The US, France, and the United Kingdom carried out Friday's joint operation in response to a devastating chemical weapons attack in the rebel-controlled Damascus suburb of Douma, which killed dozens of people earlier this month. Labour party leader MP Jeremy Corbyn called the attack "legally questionable". Inherent in effective deterrence is instilling fear and uncertainty in the mind of the adversary - fear that they would suffer unacceptable consequences for taking an action, and uncertainty about the exact parameters of the next retaliatory attack.

Haley said the U.S. successfully hit the heart of Syria's chemical weapons enterprise, and because of these actions, it is confident that it has crippled Syria's chemical weapons programme. "When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line", said US Ambassador Nikki Haley.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement that a target of the strike was the Syrian government's "clandestine chemical arsenal".

"Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms the use of chemical weapons in last week's attack in eastern Ghouta, Syria", Trudeau said in a statement issued from Lima, Peru, where he is attending the Summit of the Americas.

Syrian state media called the attack a "flagrant violation of global law", while Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called it a "crime".
