Will Facebook's data-scraping woes bleed into healthcare and pharma? British lawmakers publish evidence that Brexit's leave campaign group did benefit from Cambridge Analytica's work

We've already learned quite a bit from Mark Zuckerberg's grilling on Capitol Hill. He was confident. He capably tackled numerous queries proposed last week by Bloomberg columnists.

Facebook makes almost all its revenue and profit from advertising and has a market value of $478 billion, the sixth-largest in the S&P 500.

That is disturbing, given that we have been examining this component of Facebook's non-user information gathering for as far back as five years, as far back as the practice was exposed by researchers at Packet Storm Security. But it's a loss for the rest of us.

Facebook is under fire for a privacy breach affecting more than 87 million users, and regulations affecting all users could be on the way. This entire process, including a variety of other concerns regarding fake news and targeted ads, could have a major impact on the business model for Facebook in the future.

This inherent conflict was on display during two of Zuckerberg's exchanges.

Sen. Lindsey Graham was the first to bring up the situation during the hearing by asking the simple question of "Who is your biggest competitor?" to Zuckerberg. Graham cut that line of answering short by pressing his line of questioning to urge Zuckerberg to list a single competitor when it comes to its main service. With Google, Facebook effectively has a "digital duopoly", controlling 56.8% of the online advertising market, according to eMarketer. He added that the company has interests in many fields - including running aircraft - but he doesn't think that makes it an aerospace company. Companies can also match their information on what they purchase in stores - that box of cereal at the supermarket, for example - and marry it with Facebook account information. "Facebook makes a lot of advertising money off this", Wozniak said. His repeated apologies sounded hollow as his admission that FB knew about the Cambridge Analytica breach of security three years ago spilt out only after New York Times and the Guardian blew the lid off the scam. And could Facebook guarantee that it wasn't tracking paying users on other parts of the internet? He also pointed out that users can download Facebook's file on them to see what the company has access to.

"Congresswoman, I don't remember if we had a financial penalty", Zuckerberg said under questioning by Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette. And that means the consent of Facebook users is not informed.

Zuckerberg repeatedly assured lawmakers that he believed Facebook is in compliance with that 2011 agreement.

Users can now access various Facebook settings, including Account Settings, Privacy Shortcuts, News Feed Preferences, Activity Log, Payments Settings and access to Help & Support, with lesser number of mouse clicks.

We have a responsibility to protect your information. However, as more is revealed about the misuse of Facebook's services by Cambridge Analytica, it would seem as if a users personal data has been passed on if a friend on the social network has previously used the app.

Maybe people would find this system too cumbersome to be practical.

The main theme of both hearings seems to be that US lawmakers are quite unfamiliar with not only Facebook but also the business models and intricacies of similar tech and social media companies.

Facebook could voluntarily change the rules of the game. Facebook's USA revenue from advertising is expected to jump 17% to $21 billion this year, the research firm says.

"At this point, it's hard to imagine Facebook without Sheryl", Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post last month on her 10-year anniversary with the company.
