Apple Warns Employees to Stop Leaking Information to Media
15 April, 2018, 18:30
Apple has a long history of trying to tightly control information about its products and culture.
Apple has a message for its employees: if you're caught leaking confidential company information, you could lose your job and even face criminal charges. They also state that once a leaker is fired, Apple will try hard to make finding employment elsewhere almost impossible.
The memo lays out examples of times when whole product announcements have been spoiled by leaks to the media. The memo also stated examples on specific cases, such as, in one incident the employee got access to internal information from a meeting and leaked that information.
Apple on its memo also mentioned that the leaked information about a new product can negatively impact sales of the current products. Last year Apple caught 29 leakers.
Apple said, though not in as many words, that if found guilty the leakers would face hell.

Apple is not alone though as Google, Facebook, and the rest of Silicon Valley all deal with information leaks. Multiple employees were caught sharing details about the iPhone X, iPad Pro and Airpods with a 9to5 Mac reporter, according to the memo. Those 29 people included employees, contractors, and supply chain partners. There's a 180-day confidentiality period on FCC photos after filing, and that window just recently lapsed for these gold iPhone pics, so now we have an official view of what a new iPhone X colorway could look like.
Every year the details of the new products are leaked ahead of the launch. "12 of those were arrested", said the memo published on Bloomberg.
"Everyone comes to Apple to do the best work of their lives - work that matters and contributes to what all 135,000 people in this company are doing together".
