A Melbourne woman who scammed more than $40,000 from her family friends after claiming she was dying of cancer has been jailed for three months.

Nathan and Rachel Cue, long-time neighbors and friends of Dickenson's parents, took tens of thousands from their mortgage despite a struggling family business in a desperate attempt to save Hanna's life.

Hanna Dickenson accepted £22,000 in donations after she told her parents that she needed vital medical treatment overseas.

Dickenson pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining property by deception in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

Magistrate David Starvaggi has sentenced Dickenson for "despicable" actions that "tear at the very heartstrings of human nature".

Melbourne Magistrates Court heard how Hanna Dickenson had been living a party lifestyle, involving drugs, alcohol, and global holidays, and had run out of money, 9news Australia reports.

Apple Ordered To Pay $502.6 Mln To VirnetX In Patent Fight
If this feels familiar, it's because we've been here before , and Apple isn't VirnetX's only target. As a result, Apple has been ordered to pay damages to the tune of $502.6 million.

"The court must rightly deter others from engaging in this sort of conduct, taking advantage of people willing to assist and advance moneys to support somebody in what is perceived to be very tragic or dire consequences", Starvaggi said.

Dickenson told her parents she was severely ill with leiomyosarcoma, and not responding to treatments at Epworth and Peter MacCallum hospitals. "These are people who worked hard and dug into their own pockets", he added.

Her parents gave her the money to fund said "treatment".

But her truth was soon uncovered when one of her donors saw her party photos on Facebook, which made him question her claims.

Comparisons were made between Dickenson's crime and that of health blogger Belle Gibson, who was fined $410,000 a year ago after falsely claiming to have survived brain cancer.

Lindsay said she'll likely appeal her client's sentence.
