The federal and British Columbia privacy commissioners are joining forces to investigate Facebook and Canadian political consultancy AggregateIQ - two firms at the centre of an global uproar over the unauthorized use of social-media data. "This may take some time", a Facebook spokeswoman wrote in an email to Bloomberg.

In response, Facebook revealed to Tech Crunch its plans to launch feature to delete sent messages for Facebook users. "Mark (Zuckerberg) is really sorry for that, and what we're doing now is taking really firm action".

In Instagram, the unsend feature works differently. A spokesperson told the organisation that the "only possible option is an expiration timer" users can set on messages.

Facebook said it will require advertisers who want to run either political ads or so-called issue ads - which may not endorse a specific candidate or party but which discuss political topics - to verify themselves.

"To get authorized by Facebook, advertisers will need to confirm their identity and location". It has not specified what number of followers would trigger the requirement.

Techcrunch first reported the message deletion scandal, where several sources claimed that they had messages from Zuckerberg and other Facebook executives mysteriously disappear from their inbox.

Moscow has denied the allegations. "We started testing the authorisation process this week, and people will begin seeing the label and additional information in the USA later this spring", the blog post added.

Denham says her office is "conducting a broader investigation into how social media platforms were used in political campaigning".

These updates are part of Facebook's efforts to get its image back on track after over a month of bad press and harsh criticism being thrown at the company and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the way they have handled the privacy of their users. "We did not think enough about the abuse cases and now we're taking really firm steps across the board". "There's a lot of hard work we have to do to make it harder for nation states like Russian Federation to do election interference", he said. Especially since Facebook also said that it would stop Zuckerberg from deleting anymore messages before it can roll out the ability to everyone.

It has admitted that globally, data on about 87 million people - against the earlier believed 50 million - may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica with nearly 80% of users being in the US. They realize they won't catch every ad that should be labeled, and Facebook encourages anyone who sees an unlabeled political ad to report it. People can do this by tapping the three dots at the top right corner of the ad and selecting "Report Ad".

Facebook suspended Canadian political consultancy AggregateIQ over alleged improper access to user data and presumed ties to Cambridge Analytica.
