Richard Osborn-Brooks, the 78-year-old man who was arrested over the fatal stabbing of an intruder during a burglary at his south-east London home, has been bailed until May pending further enquiries, Scotland Yard has said.

The break-in occurred at around 12.45am on Wednesday morning when Mr Osborn-Brooks discovered two intruders inside his house on South Park Crescent, Hither Green.

The second man has not been found and at least one suspect was believed to be armed with a screwdriver, police said.

The 38-year-old was later found by paramedics collapsed on a nearby street when he was transported to a central London hospital and pronounced dead.

Detectives have renewed their appeal for information about the incident early on Wednesday in Hither Green.

The pensioner was held in custody in south London on Wednesday, having initially been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm while officers investigated the incident before he was later re-arrested on suspicion of murder. The pensioner suffered bruising to his arms, while the second suspected burglar fled the scene prior to officers arriving and remains at large, the statement added.

Neighbours of Osborn-Brooks defended his actions, saying he should not be punished for protecting himself.

Adam Lake, who lives near the scene, said: "When I heard it was a burglary I wasn't surprised, there's been a noticeable increase in crime in the area".

The witness said the wound was "an inch long" and he believed it was a knife injury.

"I think that it was a knife and I think from what my partner said that the black guy (the driver) pulled it out and threw it away".

'It is possible that he fled the scene in a vehicle, possibly a white van, leaving the scene in the direction of Further Green Road. I think he was dead already.
