Google has revealed it is banning all forms of mining extensions from the Chrome Web Store, saying it has it has already blocked 90% of Chrome browser cryptocurrency mining extensions due to their non-compliance to Google policy.

Previously the Chrome Web Store allowed cryptocurrency mining extensions if that was the application's only goal and the user was adequately informed about the mining behavior. But James Wagner, Google's extensions platform product manager, said on Monday that there had been a recent spike in "malicious extensions" hidden in Chrome downloads.

Chrome will continue to allow non-mining Blockchain, but as far as we can tell, it's going to be quite a tough one to police. Jordan enjoys the outdoors, especially astronomy, and likes to play the bag pipes and explore southern California on foot in his spare time. Since last fall, Chrome developers have expressed concerns about cryptojacking efforts via users' web browsers.

The decision to bar the extensions was effective from yesterday, and existing extensions will be removed by late June.

Tech companies' crackdown on cryptocurrency-related scams is continuing. "Unfortunately, approximately 90% of all extensions with mining scripts that developers have attempted to upload to Chrome Web Store have failed to comply with these policies, and have been either rejected or removed from the store", he explained.

The new policy, according to Google will give opportunity to users to use the store without exposing themselves to risks.

The Chromium Blog confirms that mining scripts consume significant CPU resources and impact system performance and power consumption. "Unfortunately, these same capabilities have attracted malicious software developers who attempt to abuse the platform at the expense of users", Wagner noted.
