Trump threatens to veto $1.3 trillion spending bill over immigration

President Donald Trump speaks about the spending bill during a press conference Trump threatens to veto $1.3 trillion spending bill over immigration

But numerous president's fellow Republicans railed against the measure, one calling it "monstrous".

His remarks came just hours after the US Senate voted 65-32 in favour of the spending bill, which had been approved on Thursday in the House of Representatives by a 256-167 vote, the Washington Post reported.

The president suggested in a Friday morning tweet that he might reject the 2,000-page package.

Aides had been insisting Trump would sign the measure because it authorizes tens of billions of dollars in additional military spending. "I can't sit here and tell you and your viewers that we love everything in the bill", he said on Fox.

President Donald Trump is warning Congress that he will "never sign another bill like this again", as he signs a $1.3 trillion spending bill.

Asked why he'd made the threat, Trump said he'd "looked very seriously at the veto", but "because of the incredible gains that we've been able to make for the military that overrode any of our thinking".

Trump also has been at odds with Democrats in Congress over the fate of Dreamer immigrants - those brought to the United States illegally when they were children.

Trump teased a 1 p.m. "news conference" on Twitter Friday, where the official said he will sign the bill to avert a government shutdown at midnight.

Republicans and Democrats were unable to agree over the issue. Democrats offered to provide the money but only if Trump agreed to provide DACA recipients with a path to USA citizenship, as he had in an earlier debate. "They did not want DACA in this bill". Were we ever going to get that? No.

Trump tweeted earlier Friday that he was considering vetoing the bill, in part because "the BORDER WALL, which is desperately needed for our National Defense, is not fully funded".

The White House and Republican lawmakers and sought to strike a deal with Democrats that would have included border wall funding and provide legal status or citizenship for DACA recipients, but a deal has remained elusive.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi appeared to taunt Republicans over funding for a wall, which her party firmly opposes.

Trump actually threatened to veto the bill early in the day on Friday, but reversed himself during a rambling signing ceremony at the White House.

Several people panned Mr Trump's empty veto threat. "But generally speaking, we think this is a really, really good immigration package", he said. "Everyone knows you're the reason Daca recipients are abandoned".

"F-k that", Trump reportedly said, after being reminded that a budget deadline loomed at midnight, and he would be blamed if the federal government were to shut down again.

Mr Trump has been increasingly frustrated with the media coverage of the bill, as conservative politicians and other critics have railed against it on cable news and in private calls.

He also argued lawmakers were not allowed enough time to read it.
