"The claim that this is a data breach is completely false", Facebook said in a new statement on Saturday, saying app users knowingly provided their information.

Nix testified before the parliamentary committee on February 27 that Cambridge Analytica carried out advertising campaigns and conducted opt-in surveys on Facebook to collect data on users' political attitudes on behalf of its campaign clients. "We know its power".

The data obtained through Facebook was used to microtarget specific voters in order to persuade them to vote for Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

San Francisco: After suspending Strategic Communication Laboratories (SCL), along with its political data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica, for violating its policies and commitments, Facebook has denied any data breach as claimed by some media reports.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) shares dropped on Monday following reports Cambridge Analytica used data gathered from profiles on the social media giant to target voters in the 2016 USA general election.

Owned by the hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, Cambridge Analytica was headed at the time by Trump's key adviser Steve Bannon.

Facebook found out about the breach in 2015, shut down the professor's access and asked Cambridge Analytica to certify that it had deleted the user data, but suspended the data-analysis firm from its platform on Friday after learning the information wasn't erased.

"We do not work with Facebook data, and we do not have Facebook data".

On the same day, the Guardian reported that in one of the tech giant's biggest ever data breaches, the data analytics firm that worked with Donald Trump's election team harvested millions of Facebook profiles of United States voters and used them to build a powerful software programme to predict and influence choices at the ballot box.

It also helped the Leave.EU campaign during the EU referendum campaign.

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, urged for an investigation of Cambridge Analytica and said Facebook must explain why it would provide private user information to a company with links to Russian Federation.

Analytica reportedly used the information with most users having not given their permission for it to have been shared by with a third party. "We do use Facebook as a platform to advertise, as do all brands and most agencies, or all agencies, I should say", Nix told the committee.

University of Cambridge psychologist Aleksandr Kogan created a personality prediction test app, thisisyourdigitallife, which was downloaded by 270,000 people. The company added it "demanded certifications from Kogan and all parties he had given data to that the information had been destroyed".

And of course, Facebook has also been accused of letting advertisers exclude people by race or ethnicity - including ads for housing, employment or credit, and of allowing advertisers to target their messages specifically to groups like "Jew haters".
