Officials release video showing outside of Parkland high school during shooting

Student Walkouts Planned Across US to Protest Gun Violence New York area students join nationwide walkout to protest gun violence

Today the Broward County Sheriff's Office released video surveillance footage showing the outside of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School the day of the deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The footage shows a man, identified by police as Peterson, at 2:23 p.m. approaching the wall of the school's Building 12 and standing there for several minutes.

Security video shows a Florida sheriff's deputy go toward the Parkland High School building while a gunman massacred 17 students and staff members, but he stayed outside with his handgun drawn.

But the edited 27-minute video that was released Thursday illuminates little.

Broward sheriff's Col. Jack Dale disputed Grollnek's conclusion, saying in a statement that the training Peterson and other deputies take includes live-fire simulations for both single deputy and multiple deputy situations.

A judge granted that request, and neither the school district nor the Broward County Sheriff's Office appealed the ruling.

"His actions were enough to warrant an internal affairs investigation, as requested by Sheriff Scott Israel on February 21", the sheriff's office said.

Cruz was arrested a few blocks away from the school. However, the sheriff's office warned that timestamps on the video and timestamps on the dispatch recording might not be "exactly synchronized".

Authorities said Peterson was armed but stayed outside the building for a total of four minutes.

While Scot Peterson did not enter the building to confront the shooter, 21-year IL police officer Randy Petersen (no relation) said it's a complicated situation. It is hard to tell from the video if Mr Peterson is actually in the clip at times, as the figures are indistinguishable in the upper corner of the shot.

The 30-minute video shows former Deputy Scot Peterson flagging down another male staff member from the school at the main administration building and hopping on a golf cart to race to the freshman building.

It begins shortly after gunfire erupted, with Peterson and civilian security monitor Kelvin Greenleaf walking with objective outside an administration building, clearly alarmed by sounds.

Cruz appeared in court on Wednesday - the same day thousands of students across the United States conducted school walkouts protesting gun violence - and kept his head bowed as he was formally arraigned. "Addressed the killer. Killed the killer".

"To go to the point where we have a police officer that is either incompetent in their physical skills, their defensive tactics skills, their shooting, they're not going to have confidence and a lack of confidence can get you to a point where an officer either fails to act or overreacts", said Petersen. The Broward Sheriff's Office active shooter policy calls for deputies to interrupt a shooting and search for victims when there's a ceasefire.

Cruz faces 34 murder and attempted murder charges in the attack and a judge entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf Wednesday.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, is accused of killing 17 students and staff during the February 14 massacre at the school, where more than 70 surveillance cameras are installed.

BSO initially resisted release of the video, but at a hearing last week, changed course and agreed the footage should be made public. His attorney has said Cruz would plead guilty if prosecutors would not pursue the death penalty, which they have refused to do.
