Advocate Yeshwanth Shenoy said in his plea that IndiGo's entire A320neo fleet should be grounded until the manufacturers give in writing that the existing defects have been rectified and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation is satisfied.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar, however, agreed to hear the other prayers of the plea which also sought publication the details of incidents of engine failure and accidents caused by these on the website of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) within 24 hours of their occurrence. Passengers are likely to face harrowing times with IndiGo and GoAir deciding to cancel more than 600 flights this month, of which 480 are by IndiGo alone, following grounding of 11 A320 neo planes with faulty Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines.

Previously, the DGCA had ordered grounding of three aircraft in IndiGo's A320neo fleet after the European Aviation Safety Agency issued an emergency airworthiness directive regarding similar A320neos on February 9, 2018. Three IndiGo planes are already on the ground following the problem.

Going by passenger load factor recorded for both airlines in January (90%), the cancellation of 626 flights will hit an estimated one lakh passengers. Also, as both Indigo and GoAir together operate more than 1,200 flights daily on an average, the cancellations may significantly disrupt the summer schedule of a huge number of travellers. GoAir has canceled seven daily flights to 10 destinations from March 16-22.
