The social media platform Wednesday banned the Facebook page of "Britain First", the far-right fringe group U.S. President Donald Trump once retweeted to near universal condemnation.

More than two million people had liked the group's Facebook page.

The social media monolith also targeted party leaders Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen for repeatedly breaking Facebook's rules governing content.

"[The pages had] repeatedly posted content created to incite animosity and hatred against minority groups, which disqualifies the Pages from our service", Facebook said in a blog post Wednesday.

"There are times ... when legitimate political speech crosses the line and becomes hate speech created to stir up hatred against groups in our society", Facebook said in a statement.

In a blogpost, Facebook said that "People can express robust and controversial opinions without needing to denigrate others on the basis of who they are".

Britain First gained worldwide attention previous year when President Donald Trump retweeted three inflammatory videos posted by Fransen on Twitter, setting off a political firestorm that strained relations between London and Washington. The Britain First page and the pages for both Golding and Fransen have now been removed for "repeatedly [posting] content created to incite animosity and hatred against minority groups".

Among those to notice were representatives from Texas Southern University, in Houston. "I have my own day!" As of Sunday, more than 130,000 people had reacted to the Facebook post and almost 7,000 have shared it.

It's been a rough month for the bigoted bunch, as the Britain First party leaders were both convicted for committing hate crimes on March 7.

The most recent content that resulted in Facebook removing the group is believed to compare Muslims immigrants to animals and a photo of group leaders with the caption: "Islamophobic and proud".

Facebook has been struggling for years now with how to deal with extremist content on its platform, but rarely intervenes in such a direct manner, it added.

The ban is such that Britain First will not be able to create any pages in the future.

Facebook has deleted right wing group Britain First from the site amid repeat breaches of its community standards.

"I hope other companies will follow", she told British lawmakers. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of stlucianewsonline.com, its sponsors or advertisers.

Mark Collett, a "British political activist and the author of The Fall of Western Man" also took to Twitter to condemn the action.
