The wider Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) fell by 15.80 points or 0.15 per cent to provisionally close at 10,226.85 points (at 3.30 p.m.).

The 30-share BSE Sensex opened with a jump of 114.48 points at 33, 465.05 but soon plunged to red. However, the broader market remained with 1,530 stocks declining as against 1,197 stocks that advanced suggesting that the underlying sentiments still is cautious.

On Thursday, the Sensex managed its highest single-day gain of 318 points since Feb 23 to end its six days losing streak.

"Major Asian markets have closed on a positive note, while European indices like CAC 40 and FTSE 100 traded in the green".

On the currency front, the Indian rupee weakened by 26 paise to close at 65.15 against the U.S. dollar from its previous close at 64.89.
