Convicted Nazi guard dubbed the 'Bookkeeper of Auschwitz' dies aged 96

Oskar Groening known as the'bookkeeper of Auschwitz who in 2015 became one of the last people to be convicted for crimes in the Nazi genocide has died aged 96 BREAKING NEWS: The Bookkeeper of Auschwitz DIES aged 96 without ever seeing the inside of a jail cell for his role in 300,000 murders

The 96-year-old former "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" died before starting his jail sentence for participation in the Holocast, according to a Sunday report.

German prosecutor Kathrin Soefker said he died in hospital on Friday.

Groening was found guilty in July 2015 of being an accessory to the murders of 300,000 Jews at the camp and sentenced to four years in prison.

During his trial, Groening acknowledged "moral guilt" but said it was up to the court to rule on his legal culpability.

At Groening's original trial in Lueneburg, Germany, Judge Franz Kompisch said Groening was part of the "machinery of death" at the Nazi camp in Auschwitz, Poland, and also stole money from victims, although no evidence was presented that tied him directly to any deaths.

Groening, a former Nazi SS officer, did not kill anyone himself while working at the camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, but the lower court ruled he helped support those responsible for mass murder through various actions, including by sorting bank notes seized from trainloads of arriving Jews. He, too, died before he could begin serving his five-year-sentence.

In 2011, former OH autoworker John Demjanjuk became the first person convicted in Germany exclusively for serving as a death camp guard without evidence of being involved in a specific killing.

Germany's constitutional court rejected an argument in late December that imprisonment at such an advanced age would violate his "right to life".

He came to attention in 2005 after giving interviews about his work in the camp in an attempt to persuade Holocaust deniers that the genocide had taken place at a time when most Holocaust prosecutions still focused on leaders rather than rank-and-file perpetrators.
