Day care worker gets 21 years for drugging kids to go tanning
12 March, 2018, 18:49
A daycare owner has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison for drugging children with melatonin and leaving them alone while she went tanning and to the gym.
Last month, Neatherlin pleaded guilty to 12 counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and a single count of third-degree assault.
They arrested Neatherlin last March after seeing her leave the daycare center twice - once to drop off her kids at school and the second time to go to Tan Republic - while she was supposed to care for seven children.
Neatherlin reportedly told parents they could not pick up their children between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and police found those were the times she had checked in at a local Cross Fit gym and tanning salon.
Additionally, Neatherlin also lied to the parents, telling them she was a registered nurse, when, in fact, she had no such qualification in real life.
Neatherlin's rap sheet dates back to 2007, when she was charged with multiple instances of theft and identity theft.
"Everybody makes mistakes, but not everybody takes responsibility for those mistakes", Neatherlin said, according to the news station. With that said, I hope the court and the parents accept my apology.
"I made a very poor call, and it has forever changed my life and even ended it", she said. Prosecutors initially appealed for a 35-year sentence.

Church of Scientology readies to launch a TV Network
So claims one promo for the Church of Scientology's newly announced TV network named, fittingly enough, The Scientology Network . A network was initially said to be launching on Spectrum, but the cable company denied such plans.
The Oregonianreports the scheme unraveled after an ex-boyfriend and ex-roommate tipped off police, who began tracking Neatherlin a year ago.
The court heard anecdote after anecdote of close calls and actual harm befalling the children Neatherlin was paid to take care of, according to the Bend Bulletin.
Officers watched as parents dropped off their children and then saw Neatherlin drive away hours later, authorities said. She also conceded to overheating a bottle of milk resulting in giving a child burns.
In 2014, she was found to be caring for more children than allowed without a license.
"In my opinion, your honor", Kevin Hord, one of the fathers of the children in the day care told the judge, "100 years would not be enough".
When handing down the sentence, Judge Wells Ashby highlighted the carnage Neatherlin had caused for the families, noting several were still dealing with the aftermath, including broken relationships, behavioural problems and financial struggles.
The kids were aged between six months and four years old.
