Women's day was first celebrated on February 28, 1909 by the Socialist Party of America, until the United Nations began in 1975 celebrating March 8th as International Women's Day during International Women's Year.

Meanwhile, Secretary for Gender Balancing and Youth Development of Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP), Ms Christiana Ojo advised Nigerian women not to get carried away with the celebration that comes with the day but to discuss, chart a new course and devise practical solutions to challenges women face in the society. The occasion picked up more momentum when a series of global human rights conventions were adopted and applied, on the top of which was the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) on December 18, 1979.

To help shape the conversation and pull together the community, in 1996, the United Nations proposed that International Women's Day choose a theme each year.

This year's theme for the International Women's Day was, "Press for Progress", an aptly named campaign in a time where women are pushing harder than ever before for equality. If you're out there marching already, great!

"And with the revelations so many women have been assaulted, discriminated against and generally had to be quiet for fear of losing opportunity and a job, we decided we were all in it together". She met with other women in Los Angeles and became one of the most active and outspoken members of the #TimesUp movement to end sexual harassment and discrimination at work. But the day still retains the essence of its Marxist roots by encouraging women to think of themselves as a homogenous class with discrete common interests, in opposition to men's.
