Just weeks after the 2018 Winter Olympics, Mikaela Shiffrin secured her second straight overall World Cup title at a giant slalom race on Friday in Ofterschwang, Germany.
Shiffrin's second run, though slightly slower at 54.85 seconds, was still enough to seal her victory. With one race remaining, she leads world giant slalom champion Tessa Worley by 92 points in the discipline standings with one race remaining.
Shiffrin is also on pace to win the World Cup slalom title, something she also did in 2013-15 and 2017.
Next week sees racing in Sweden from Wednesday to Sunday, in what will be a lap of honour for the all-conquering Shiffrin. Holdener failed to win or finish in second place, which was the only mathematical chance Shiffrin could be knocked out of contention.
Up next, the women race downhill at the World Cup Finals in Are March 14, followed by super-G March 15; team event March 16; slalom March 17 and giant slalom March 18. "To have the overall locked in now before going to Are is pretty cool". Lindsey Vonn, who did not race this weekend but will be in Are, holds the record of 81 wins.
The season-ending World Cup finals are next week in Are, Sweden.
"For me the important thing is the balance between risk and being smart".
On a course set by her coach Mike Day, Shiffrin was the fastest in the opening run of Saturday's slalom, leading Austrians Katharina Gallhuber and Bernadette Schild by 0.30 and 0.39 seconds, respectively. Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel won the event by 0.74 of a second, her first career victory.
"For sure I have a big lead", Shiffrin said.
Friday's race was interrupted after Tina Robnik crashed and had to be taken off the hill on a sled with an apparent knee injury.
