Should Gov. Scott remove Broward Sheriff Israel over Parkland shooting?

In the four-page letter, 74 out of Florida's 76 state House representatives accused Israel of failing to take significant action to prevent the February 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in which a 19-year-old suspected gunman confessed to killing 17 people using an assault-style rifle.

"Let's not forget the whole crux of this is, giving law enforcement, giving deputies, giving police officers, not only in Broward county but in Florida and around the nation expanded power to be able to do something more than just write a report", he said.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel revealed that the school resource deputy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Scott Peterson, waited outside the school building as the shooting unfolded.

The armed officer on duty at the Florida school where a shooter killed 17 people never went inside to engage the gunman and has been placed under investigation, officials announced Thursday. He has since resigned.

Reports also emerged, citing Coral Springs police sources, that local cops discovered three additional deputies outside while Cruz unleashed horror - only to escape in the chaos.

The FBI and Sheriff Israel owe Parkland a full, public accounting of how their law enforcement agencies failed to stop Cruz - both when the bullets were flying and before he ever picked up a gun.

But the sheriff was less critical of three other Broward County Sheriff's deputies who were reportedly seen standing by their squad cars while violent chaos erupted inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Additionally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has admitted that it failed to act on a tip received just last month warning that shooter Nikolas Cruz was a potential threat.

FDLE confirmed they will begin the process of review immediately, the governor's office said. "I've given awesome leadership to this agency", Israel says.

Teachers were told they could return to the school Friday to collect belongings from classrooms that have been off-limits since the slayings more than a week earlier.

"I'm not angry; I understand that things happen", said Carly Novell, a 17-year-old senior who survived the massacre. In the future, to prevent tragedies, law enforcement officers need expand powers to detain risky people, he said.

Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said at the time that he was "in shock and outraged" that Mr Peterson had not entered the school more quickly.

A major point of contention was exactly when Israel found out that Peterson hadn't gone into the school during the shooting.

"Sadly, he was not the only one that ignored it", Hager said of Israel.

"I don't know what that means", Tapper said.

Israel also accused Hager of falsely claiming Broward Sheriff deputies visited Nikolas Cruz's home 39 times. One federal lawmaker said Sunday that a single armed law enforcement officer may be of little help in a situation where a shooter is heavily armed with semi-automatic weapons.

Tapper also brought up the at least 18 calls made to the Broward County Sheriff's Office related to the shooter prior to the shooting.

In the 2016 call, officers received information from a neighbor's son that Cruz planned to "shoot up" an unknown school.

The incident follows a long series of missteps from almost all levels of law enforcement who had crossed paths with Cruz in recent years.
