Michelle Gisin had been perplexed by the slalom for some time, showing a flair for the discipline but rarely putting together an exceptional full run. She won both of those medals at the 2010 Vancouver Games, when she became the only American woman ever to have won gold in the Olympics' downhill.

Lindsey Vonn made a mistake early in the slalom and didn't finish in what was likely the final race of her Winter Games career. Vonn won bronze in the downhill and Shiffrin won gold in the giant slalom and silver in the combined.

Swiss racers went 1-3, Michelle Gisin winning gold, Wendy Holdener bronze.

And another medal for the Gisin household.

Her formative years skiing came on the 150-foot hill he built on an old cow pasture in Milton, Wisconsin.

"The best ever. It makes everything more attractive", Michelle Gisin said. She also posed in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit issue.

"But I really hope it only takes one more season because it would be hard for me to continue on after that", she added.

In downhill, the immortals measure themselves not exclusively by Olympic golds, but by World Cup wins. "I wish this wasn't my last Olympics, but it is", Vonn said, looking down at the snow underfoot and shaking her head, "so I'm trying to accept that and deal with the emotions of that and enjoy the ride".

Vonn, who faced accusations of being anti-American following criticism of US President Donald Trump, insists she is 99.9 percent sure not to compete in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. She dedicated her performance to Don Kildow, happy to have won at least one medal in his name. To be on the podium with a friend and teammate? Relive three of her top Olympic moments.

Vonn, 33, has maintained a lighthearted attitude at the 2018 Winter Games. Why she marked the occasion by posing with dozens of folks for a group photo near the finish line.

Vonn spent much of her session taking questions about her, um, extensive experience - "You're not getting any younger", was the way one reporter put it, to which the skier replied with a smile, "Come right out and say it, why don't you!" - and the emotions of her (presumably) last Olympics.

"I told her ... if I physically could continue for four years, then I probably would, as long as I considered myself still a competitor", Vonn said.

With a third of the 12 riders limping off the course with injuries, Wise faced an all-or-nothing run after his ski bindings failed him in his two previous trips down. "So that's the extent of my slalom training this year".

Shiffrin is the best female skier of today, chasing a second consecutive overall title; Vonn is the best female skier in history, just five World Cup race wins away from tying Ingemar Stenmark's all-time record of 86.
