Trump supporters, conservatives rage over Russian bot purge, #TwitterLockOut

Update on Twitter's Review of the 2016 U.S. Election - Twitter Blog Pro-Gun Russian Bots Flood Twitter After Parkland Shooting

The apparent cause was the latest culling by Twitter of accounts that in some way violated the company's terms of service, a Twitter spokesperson told Ars, including "behaviors that indicate automated activity or violations of our policies around having multiple accounts, or abuse".

However, all may not be as it appears.

Twitter announced Wednesday a crackdown on accounts powered by software "bots" which can artificially amplify a person or cause and which have been accused of manipulating the social network during the 2016 USA election.

"The twitter purge is real", Fox News commentator Dan Bongino wrote.

The social network has suspended numerous suspected bot accounts since the 2016 Presidential election.

But, still determined to make the issue about censorship, several Twitter users sought to regain their followers and enjoy a bit of vengeance along the way.

According to Twitter's rules, automated software is permitted to tweet but is banned from posting misleading or abusive content or spam. Twitter says it's already updated TweetDeck to reflect the new rules. "Our systems regularly look for suspicious account behaviors and we proactively take action on accounts that behave in spammy ways, including by requesting additional details like asking account owners to confirm a phone number". The San Francisco messaging platform said the move was meant to rid the service of spam-spewing automated accounts, and not aimed at people using the service according to the rules. On Wednesday, #twitterlockout and #twitterpurge were the top and trending hashtags used by the accounts linked to Russian influence operations tracked by the Alliance's Hamilton 68 project.

Twitter and Facebook had faced criticism from U.S. lawmakers earlier in the year for not having taken the problem seriously enough.

Some U.S. users with conservative politics complained their number of followers had gone down after Twitter asked them to verify their identity. "This is part of our ongoing, comprehensive efforts to make Twitter safer and healthier for everyone".

White nationalist Jared Taylor sued Twitter on Tuesday for banning him from the service in December, claiming the company is discriminating against him for his political views.
