Schoolgirls accompanied by school staff were able to escape an attack by Boko Haram militants in the North Eastern town of Dapchi in Nigeria on Monday, witnesses say.

Commissioner of Police, Yobe State, Sumonu Abdulmaliki, told journalists that the insurgents abducted three men in Geidam Local Government Area of the state after fleeing from a secondary school at Dapchi, Bursari Local Government in the state.

According to the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the terrorists carted away food items from the stores of the Government Girls College, Dapchi, and petrol from hawkers, who abandoned their products to run for safety.

Militants raided their school on Monday evening, but numerous students and staff had fled before they arrived. I am a Senior Secondary (SS) student of GGSS Dapchi.

The insurgents invaded the school Monday night at about 7pm. It was later after the principal placed a call that some soldiers came and then we began to see helicopter hovering around the village.

We are still searching for the remaining 94 students. We don't know what later happened, the gunmen later left the people in the mosque. All of us that escaped including our school principal, the vice principal and some other teachers stayed in the deserted house till morning.

"We can not say [if they have been abducted], because the insurgents went into the students hostel, and many of these students scaled the fence and escaped into the bushes".

One Haruna Yahaya, involved in the 2014 kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok, had 15 years added to his initial 15-year sentence.

"Many of us are traumatised; many were even fainting upon hearing any unusual sounds due to the experience".

"I came to the night market to buy fish for dinner when I heard a loud bang some meters (yards) behind me and I saw myself on the ground, and before I could pick up myself another one went off then, the third one again", he recalled.
