SpaceX's satellite internet plan backed by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai

SpaceX has confirmed plans to enter the satellite broadband market with an application to the USS FCC for clearance.

If the other commissioners follow their chief's recommendation, this won't be the first time the FCC chose to approve applications for constellations of broadband satellites.

Over the past year, the FCC has approved requests by OneWeb, Space Norway, and Telesat to access the US market to provide broadband services using satellite technology that, the FCC said, 'holds promise to expand Internet access in remote and rural areas across the country'. They are using a new generation of low-Earth orbit satellites to blanket the areas with broadband coverage at more affordable rates than previous satellite technologies.

This weekend the company intends to launch, upon its Falcon 9 rocket, the first pair of demonstration satellites - named Microsat 2a and 2b - for what it has dubbed as "Starlink"; the duo will be the secondary payloads on the rocket, with the primary payload being Paz, a radar observation satellite built by Airbus for the Spanish government.

SpaceX's demo satellites launch February 17 on a Falcon 9 rocket along with a Spanish radar-imaging satellite called PAZ. The Hawthorne, California-based company now flies the Falcon 9 rocket, and last week it launched the Falcon Heavy, the world's most powerful rocket in 45 years, then flew two of its spent boosters back to the Florida coast for a spectacular, simultaneous recovery on land.

The FCC has approved applications by other companies including OneWeb Satellites, which is building a satellite factory at Kennedy Space Center's Exploration Park in Florida.

SpaceX is not the first of the megaconstellation hopefuls to stake their claim with a demo satellite. SpaceX wants to put their satellites much closer, at around 750 miles, only three times further than the ISS.

Falcon has had a backlog of missions after mishaps occurred on the East Coast, requiring investigations to find and fix flaws before launches could resume.

The satellite internet side of its revenue picture could help it pay for ambitious projects like its proposed Mars missions, as SpaceX CEO Elon Musk explained previously when outlining the company's long-term plans.

If these tests go well, SpaceX could begin launching the first of its satellites later this year, with a functional, if limited, network in place by 2020.

SpaceX has filed documents with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) indicating that Starlink will have a number of ground stations, including the project's headquarters in Redmond, Washington; a station in Brewster, Washington; and another at SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

A contract with the European Space Agency has already been signed, and the craft will also collaborate with the European Union's satellite centre.
