Former Massachusetts governor and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will run for a U.S. Senate seat representing Utah and plans to announce his bid online on Thursday, multiple sources reported Wednesday.

Romney's been considered a top candidate for the Senate seat after longtime Republican Sen.

Romney, a two-time presidential candidate and former governor of MA, is also scheduled to speak at a Utah County GOP event Friday evening. While Romney's loss to President Barack Obama in 2012 wasn't almost as lopsided as Reagan's blowout over Mondale, his loss came as a deep disappointment to the Republican Party and caused a tremendous amount of soul-searching among the party's establishment.

Romney has been a frequent critic of the president in the past. When Donald Trump's candidacy rose, Romney urged Republicans not to support Trump, an effort that fizzled with Trump winning the nomination. Trump, a man whose blood pressure rises with every sign of criticism, threw a punch back.

Romney has not faced the media during that time, and has deflected questions about running when reporters have caught up to him.

The race is to succeed Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, who announced last month he would retire at the end of his term after serving as a U.S. Senator since 1977. Romney would undoubtedly become one of the most well-known members of the Senate upon his arrival, and speculation over which coveted committee assignments he might seek is already well underway.

'A business genius he is not, ' Romney said.

"I think there are areas where he can be helpful to the White House and there are always areas where he's going to disagree and he's going to be very clear and public about those disagreements", Madden added. "Mainly on the national security and foreign policy front", Madden said, "So I think he'll look to quickly establish his voice there".

"Here's a guy that is from outside of Utah that apparently has victory in hand", he said.
