Frank Reich wants Indianapolis Colts to be 'toughest'

When asked by former Colts punter Pat McAfee whether he loves or hates McDaniels, the Patriots offensive coordinator whom Reich's Eagles just downed in Super Bowl LII, and who spurned the Colts to create Reich's first head-coaching opportunity, Reich dialed up the flawless response.

"Do you hate or love Josh McDaniels for what happened?" former Colts punter Pat McAfee, lodged in the crowd, asked Reich.

Twelve years later Reich has landed back where his humble coaching career commenced; he's the backup quarterback who became a backup solution to the Indianapolis Colts' mess of a coaching search.

Reich played quarterback in the National Football League and went to four Super Bowls with the Buffalo Bills - all defeats - and began his coaching career under Tony Dungy as an intern and quality control coach of the Colts.

After Atlanta fell to New England in Super Bowl LI after the 2016 season, the San Francisco 49ers hired Falcons' offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their head coach. "I look forward to working with Frank to deliver a championship-caliber team to the city of Indianapolis", said Colts general manager Chris Ballard in a published statement. "I said to myself over and over, 'One play at a time'". I have not gotten that from the two doctors that he's seen here after the season.

Reich brings a creative offensive mind to a team that has lacked creativity and innovation in recent seasons.

First, he has to round out his coaching staff.

"We will be a multiple attack, uptempo offense, be aggressive, change things up", Reich said.

On Reich having assistant coaches already in place from the McDaniels' fiasco: "I think if there had been a problem, knowing Chris and knowing Frank, they would have dealt with it".

For some coaches, that might be an issue, but not for Reich. There still isn't a timetable for Luck's return, as he continues to take the necessary steps before throwing a football for the first time since the middle of October.

"The time frame of being able to interview in that first week [with] playoff teams, it's hard to fit everybody in", Ballard said. The thing is that most people don't know about Frank Reich because Doug Pederson is the one calling the plays...

"I embrace it. That's just part of this business". This game is not built on any one player.

Any seasoned Bills fan would tell you that when it comes to backup plans, you can't do better than our old friend, Frank Reich. "It's about this city. what we know is this: When you have a championship culture, it's going to result in many victories". Reich, who signed his contract earlier Sunday, rejoins the Colts after spending six years on the team's coaching staff from 2006-11.
