Though Porter was not recognized widely outside the White House, he was an increasingly powerful figure in the West Wing, responsible for controlling all the documents going to Trump's desk, including classified information.

The Trump White House's handling of abuse charges against men in its midst is frustrating prominent Republican women as the party's yearslong struggle to attract female voters stretches into the 2018 midterm elections.

According to CNN, Wray said White House chief of staff John Kelly had been made aware of the allegations against Porter before they were made public.

Kelly, who has not yet offered a public accounting of what happened, told The Wall Street Journal for an article published on Tuesday that "it was all done right" regarding Porter, raising questions about whether senior officials in the White House truly appreciate the gravity of the scandal enveloping them. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters at a briefing on Tuesday that Kelly retains the president's confidence, and declined to comment for this story later in the day.

The FBI says, however, that when an interim clearance is granted, "the background investigation must be expedited, and, if unfavorable information is developed at any time, the interim security clearance may be withdrawn".

Team Trump on Tuesday stuck to its story that no senior officials knew of until last week - despite that the bureau had sent a final report to the White House last summer.

Porter resigned last week amid domestic violence accusations from his ex-wives. In fact, the White House spent the first hours after learning of the accusations - including the publication of photographs of one of his ex-wives with a black eye that she said he gave her - defending Porter against the allegations and insisting that he was not being dismissed from his job.

Even after Kelly changed his stance, calling the allegations vile and orchestrating Porter's swift departure, the president has stuck up for Porter publicly, telling reporters that the situation had been "tough" and "sad" for Porter. Porter has denied the accusations.

"As I know Raj addressed last week, we let the process play out", she told reporters.

Kelly has been the target of intense scrutiny since Porter's two ex-wives came forward last week to accuse the former top Trump aide of past domestic abuse. He didn't discuss the contents of the reports.

Wray's comments conflicted with the White House assertion that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and intelligence agencies had not completed investigations into Porter.

For months, Kelly - with help from Porter - had established a semblance of stability in a White House often rattled by an unpredictable president. They also said that the investigation was never completed and that they did not know the extent of the allegations against Porter. The FBI administratively closed the file last month, but has since received additional information, which it passed along to the White House, Wray added. The question now is: Who? "It's handled by our law enforcement and intelligence community".

The folks at Fox & Friends on Monday morning took a head-on approach to the issue dogging the White House since last week.

Contrary to Gidley's suggestion, the White House was by no means blindsided by this matter. The fact that these same ugly human beings are also playing fast and loose with security clearances and classified information is borderline treasonous and an impeachable offense.

Rep Trey Gowdy, a Republican from SC, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, told CNN on Wednesday (Thursday NZT) that the panel made a decision to launch an investigation into how Porter was allowed to work at the White House under an interim security clearance despite allegations of spousal abuse.
