Amazon eliminates hundreds of jobs at Seattle HQ in rare cutback

The spheres and Day 1 building at Amazon’s downtown Seattle campus. Layoffs are coming at Amazon after a hiring binge that took the company’s Seattle head count to more than 40,000 people from just 5,000 in 2010 Amazon laying off corporate employees in rare cutback

Amazon laid off workers at its corporate campuses Monday, a rare event at one of the nation's largest corporate employers, sources at the company said.

At the end of 2017, Amazon employed 560,000 people worldwide.

The report cites "several employees" as saying that the rapid growth of the last two years has left some units over budget and some teams with too much staff for their work.

The affected departments are more mature areas of Amazon's business, such as its online retail operations.

Amazon has acknowledged the cuts.

"We are making headcount adjustments across the company - small reductions in a couple of places and aggressive hiring in many others", Adam Sedo, the spokesman, said. Amazon's workforce is now 566,000 people. It now has 4,000 positions open in Seattle and 12,000 globally, all of which are corporate jobs and not in its warehouses or fulfillment centers.

After an initial report in the Seattle Times that hundreds of Seattle-based Amazon jobs were under threat, Amazon shared a statement with a number of news outlets. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.

The layoff suggests Amazon is trying to control spending and the cut is not unusual for such a big company. The company has plans to hire 50,000 more people once it establishes its second headquarters; it is still searching for the flawless location.

The company on Monday had more than 4,000 job listings posted for Seattle, up 23 percent from the multiyear low in January.

The retail giant has also been cutting redundant positions by requiring managers who oversee other supervisors to have at least four people reporting to them.

Amazon is automating tasks such as forecasting demand for new products and negotiating their prices, said Michael Lagoni, chief executive officer of Stackline, an e-commerce data analytics firm that helps brands and manufacturers sell on Amazon.

The latest round of layoffs is not unusual for a company like Amazon.

But numerous corporate jobs are going to areas of soaring profit, like cloud-computing division Amazon Web Services, or areas where Amazon sees potential, like voice-controlled computing. Officials say that move is expected to cost upwards of five billion dollars and bring along with it some 50- thousand jobs.
