If you are like most people, it's a hard journey to lose the excess pounds gained, but a new study has yielded that there are three small habits that can help.

Prof. MacDonald said in a statement that, "It is certainly not appropriate to extrapolate from these observations to conclude about eating speed and the development of obesity - however attractive the idea that fast eaters are likely to eat more, and that eating more leads to weight gain". As part of a government scheme, all adults over 40 enrolled with health insurance companies are invited to attend health checks to detect risk factors for obesity and metabolic syndrome (a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity).

So, in the long-standing fight that millions of people have had with their unwanted kilograms, researchers have also tried to help along the way, attempting to understand which diets and lifestyle changes yield the best weight loss results. Participants also were asked about their lifestyle, including eating and sleep habits and alcohol and tobacco use.

A possible reason? Fast eaters may continue to eat even after they are full, even when their bodies have an adequate amount of calories, since the brain takes a little time to interpret chemical signals from the stomach that say "enough".

This study could not, however, prove that eating speed causes or prevents obesity, only that it appears to be associated, the researchers noted.

We may also know, either from hearsay or intuitively, that snacking after dinner or eating too close to our bedtime is not a good idea. Compared to fast eaters, the odds ratio for being obese was 0.58 for slow eaters and 0.71 for normal-speed eaters.

Snacking after dinner and eating within two hours of going to sleep also were linked to changes in weight.

The study did not measure how much people ate, so we don't know if people who ate more slowly were eating fewer calories than those who ate quickly.

Know someone who loves health advice? This may mean that people's relative levels of deprivation could affect the results.

At the start of the study, more than 22,000 people routinely ate quickly, while nearly 33,500 ate at a normal speed and almost 4,200 ate more slowly.

The verdict: eat slow and enjoy your meals, stop living your life on fast forward and take your time to savor the delish in your dish.

There may be limits to how the findings apply to the United Kingdom, in terms of the population diet, lifestyle and risk factors for obesity. Among this population, obesity was defined as BMI of at least 25 kg/m. Moreover it relied on self-report, a subjective notion of what fast, slow or normal eating pace is and looked mainly at health-conscious individuals.

If you're trying to lose weight, simply slowing down when you eat might make a difference. Do you think it has any impact on whether you gain or lose weight?
