The Syrian regime itself, either during or after the conflict, "will be answerable to worldwide justice", he added. The comments came amid unverified reports that pro-government forces have used chlorine on civilians and rebels to gain control of areas.

Former US President Barack Obama set out a red line for Syria in 2012, when he warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that the use, or even the movement, of chemical weapons would trigger US military reprisals.

Despite repeated U.S. warnings, the Syrian regime was reported to have used chlorine gas in Idlib Province earlier this month.

While France, like the United States, suspects the Syrian regime, it says it does not yet have concrete evidence on the nature and origin of the attacks.
