Google shipped 3.9 million Pixels during 2017 according to report

Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel smartphones in 2017 Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones last year, IDC says

However, IDC's latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report (via @fjeronimo) suggests that sales of Google Pixel devices doubled in 2017, reaching a total of 3.9 million units.

Google launched the first Pixel phone in October 2016 and followed it up with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

Despite Google's decision to withhold Pixel shipment numbers, IDC has released its own estimates reflecting the device's "tiny" presence in the smartphone market.

Jeronimo points out how it's a "remarkable achievement to double sales", especially during a time when consumers mostly already have smartphones. The company needed a whole year to sell as many Pixels as iPhone units Apple sells in a week. While an impressive feat to achieve given the current market saturation, Google's numbers are still paltry in comparison with the market size (around 1.5 billion devices).

Google may not be entirely new to the smartphone scene, but it's still a minor player when it comes to sales. IDC's Francisco Jeronimo has been spilling the sales stats on the Pixel range, and the good news is that Google is on the right trajectory. Based on its most recent sales figures, Apple was selling nearly 850,000 iPhones each day in the first quarter of 2018. Of course with a wider customer base you'll sell more phones. The Pixel phones are excellent, but Google just doesn't have much success in selling them.

One thing not many people will realize is that Google's smartphone pricing is even more high-end than Apple's, though. We do expect Google to improve the Pixel in future years and actually become a decent iPhone alternative, as both Pixel series have had to deal with plenty of controversies.
