"New Horizons has always been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched", Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, released Thursday. NASA said the image, captured by New Horizons's Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), was "for a time, the farthest image ever made from Earth".

The released photo surpassed the "Pale Blue Dot" images of Earth that were taken in 1990 by NASA's Voyager 1. Given that the New Horizons is still making its way through the solar system, it's entirely possible there will be more incredibly distant images in the weeks and months to come.

The images for "Pale Blue Dot" - part of a composite - were taken 3.75 billion miles (6.06 billion kilometers) away.

The probe continues to cover around 1.1 million kilometres or 700,000 miles of deep space every day, and is only the fifth man-made object in history - after Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, Voyager 2, and Voyager 1 - to be on course to fly beyond the reaches of our Solar System. They were the last photographs the probe took before its cameras were shut down. Since Voyager 1's cameras were turned off shortly after that shot was taken, the record has stood for the past 27 years.

New Horizons took more photos as it sped deeper into the cosmos in December.

Now the unit is on its way to its new goal, the double asteroid 2014 MU69 to which he will arrive in January 2019.

"Mission scientists study the images to determine the objects' shapes and surface properties, and to check for moons and rings", the space agency says.

New Horizon's principal investigator Alan Stern said in the statement that the unmanned, piano-sized probe, launched in 2006, "has been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched".

The New Horizons broke a 28-year-old record held by the Voyager 1.

Before we eventually lose touch with New Horizons, it's hoped that it will tell us plenty more about the Kuiper Belt.

New Horizons was launched in 2006 and is now in electronic hibernation. She studied journalism at Douglass College, Rutgers University, and earned a Graduate Certificate of Science from Swinburne University's Astronomy Online program.

Flight controllers at a Johns Hopkins University lab in Laurel, Maryland, will awaken the spacecraft in June and begin preparing it for the flyby.
