The study used information from a major primary care database in the United Kingdom, gathered between 1986 and 2012 to discover the link between the skin disease and depression.

The correlation between acne and depression has been revealed by a research that monitored 134,427 men and women with acne and 1,731,608 without the condition.

People with acne have a significantly increased risk of developing major depression, but only in the first five years after diagnosis, according to a large analysis of nearly two million people. They should also encourage patients to consult with a psychiatrist when necessary.

"This study highlights an important link between skin disease and mental illness", the paper's lead author, Dr. Isabelle Vallerand, told Science Daily.

"But it's a much better idea to be around other people", NY dermatologist Whitney Bowe advised. In one study, researchers found that nearly 20 percent of those with psoriasis suffer from some form of depression. Risk for major depression within one year of acne diagnosis was found to be 63% higher compared to individuals without acne, according to the study.
