Samoa declares state of disaster over tropical cyclone Tropical storm hits American Samoa with outages, some damage
Frederick Owens | 12 February, 2018, 09:12

"Very destructive hurricane force winds are expected from this evening", said the Tongan Metservice as it issued a hurricane warning.

The damage to homes and utilities in American Samoa prompted Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga to declare an emergency for the USA territory, according to Radio New Zealand.

It is already packing gusts of 275 kmh (170 mph) as it sits off the east coast of the country's most populous island Tongatapu.

"Once the urgent needs are assessed, we are expecting to help co-ordinate the supply of clean water and sanitation for those affected by the disaster".

American Samoa is located about 2,550 miles southwest of Hawaii.

Gita is now taking aim on Tonga where it's forecast to be equivalent to the strength of a Category 3 hurricane when it passes through the archipelago Monday night-Tuesday, local time (Tonga is 18 hours ahead of U.S. EST).

Tonga Police said the Tonga national emergency committee has recommended the acting Prime Minister should declare a state of emergency. The country has experienced extensive flooding from Cyclone Gita.

"Where it goes after that, I guess that's the $64,000 question".

Hanna Butler, a spokeswoman for Fiji-based Red Cross Pacific, told Reuters that approximately 300 people had evacuated the Samoan capital, Apia, to escape flooding but were now returning to their homes.

The Red Cross said residents were racing to identify strong buildings to be used for evacuations and to clean up debris such as loose wood or metal that could turn into risky missiles in powerful winds.

Truckloads of troops were helping people batten down as the capital prepared for the cyclone and evacuation centres were opened across the kingdom.
