North Koreans wrap up whirlwind of Olympic diplomacy

Countdown for Pyeong Chang opening ceremony North Koreans wrap up whirlwind of Olympic diplomacy

Kim Jong-un has invited South Korean president Moon Jae-in to Pyongyang for a near-term meeting that, if it takes place, will mark the first summit between the North Korean supreme leader and his southern counterpart.

The two are easily confused, but there is a world of difference between them: Pyongyang is the capital of nuclear-armed North Korea, while Pyeongchang is the South Korean region hosting the Winter Olympics.

The invite came as North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's younger sister visited the Winter Olympics, where today a joint Korean Ice Hockey team turned out.

The recent detente, anchored by South Korea's hosting of the Winter Olympic Games, came despite an acceleration in the North's weapons programme a year ago and pressure from Seoul's allies in Washington. Former U.S. officials and analysts say the North Korean move could put Moon, who supports Trump's pressure campaign while pursuing dialogue with the North, at odds with the Trump administration.

Moon did not immediately accept the invitation.

Kim Jong Un wanted to meet Moon "at an early date", a spokesman for the Blue House said. Moon said in response to the invitation that he hopes that the right conditions will be created so that the proposed visit will be realized.

The North Korean diplomatic initiative comes amid growing global pressure, led by the United States, aimed at imposing maximum economic and diplomatic pressure on the regime.

Pence also spoke with reporters overseas before attending the opening ceremony.

And the response to his inclusion has been mixed, with many Leicester fans praying their star can pay them back with a victor . The ball curled through the only available gap and Aguero was on hand to tap in as Sterling had done in the first half.

Kim Yong Nam, the North's nominal head of state who was also at Saturday's meeting, said "even unexpected difficulties and ordeals could be surely overcome and the future of reunification brought earlier when having a firm will and taking courage and determination to usher in a new heyday of inter-Korean relations".

Moon responded by saying he hopes the right environment will be created so the meeting between the two leaders could occur, an apparent reference to demands by the USA and other allies that the North abandon its nuclear weapons program.

"Moon should realize that offering economic benefits for symbolic North Korean gestures is not only ineffectual but would themselves risk being violations of United Nations resolutions", Klingner said.

"We want to see President Moon become a protagonist in opening a new chapter for reunification and leave great footprints in history", she said.

But if the Trump administration objects, it "will put the U.S.in a very hard position in terms of public relations in South Korea", Mr. Han said.

"President Moon must balance his desire for North-South reconciliation with his policy of denuclearization", Manning said.

The delegations shared a lunch of dried pollack dumpling soup, a regional specialty of the only divided province on the Korean peninsula, and soju, a spirit popular on both sides of the heavily militarized border.
