A Russian domestic passenger plane carrying 71 people has crashed on the outskirts of Moscow after taking off from the Russian capital's Domodedovo airport, Russian media have reported.

A Russian plane with 71 people on board crashed in the Moscow region Sunday and prosecutors said there were no survivors.

Russia's emergencies ministry has confirmed the crash to local to media, although an official statement has not yet been released.

Initial Russian reports blamed the weather or human error but it was unclear how these squared with claims that the plane broke up in the sky.

Shortly thereafter, the plane reportedly crashed near a village in the Moscow area.

The Russian Investigative Committee has opened an investigation into the crash and Russian Transport Minister Maksim Sokolov has flown to the scene. "Passengers as well as the crew could hardly survive", they said.

Flight data shows the aircraft was falling 22,000 feet per minute when the radar signal was lost, according to Flightradar24 ADS-B network.

Saratov Airlines flight 6W703 was heading to Orsk, a city near Russia's border with Kazakhstan, when it went down near the town of Argunovo, about 50 miles south-east of Moscow.

According to Tass, the aircraft was taken out of service between 2015 and 2017 because of a shortage of parts. The passengers included three children, ages 5, 13 and 17, state news agency RIA reported.

The pilots of the An-148 regional jet did not report any problems before the twin-engine aircraft plunged into the field about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Domodedovo Airport, authorities said.
