Kim Yo-jong was the first member of the North's ruling dynasty to visit the South since the Korean war that ended in an armistice in 1953.

In a rare public moment, President Moon shook hands with Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong Un, at start of the opening ceremony.

"Kim's proposal for a summit with Moon is based on the premise that the North will stick to its nuclear weapons while seeking rapprochement with the South", he told AFP.

But cyberattacks and other forms of assault were a big point of fearful contention prior to the games in South Korea as tensions with long-time, adjacent adversary North Korea and much of the diplomatic world have become even more strained.

Pence and the North Koreans have been an awkward presence at the Games to say the least.

"There are some who would not want to be in the same room together if it wasn't for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics".

The North Koreans earlier Saturday invited Moon to visit Pyongyang in what would be the Koreas' third summit talks since their 1945 division.

Moon and Kim Yong Nam, the North's ceremonial head of state, will jointly attend the unified Korean women's ice hockey team's first match later Saturday evening. "VP stands and cheers for USA athletes, VP hangs out with US athletes instead of dining with Kim regime, VP does not applaud N. Korea or exchange pleasantries w/ the most oppressive regime on earth", Agen tweeted, with check marks next to each item.

Pence is viewing the short-track competition, in which eight Americans are participating. "North Korea is probably trying to give the impression that it is taking the lead in dialogue". One banner seen at the rally even called on US President Donald Trump to bomb the North.

Pence's tweeted day-after position: 'The U.S. will not allow the propaganda charade by the North Korean regime to go unchallenged on the world stage'. "I thought things would be unusual and very different, but I found a lot of things being similar", Kim said at Sunday's dinner, according to Moon's office. He also praised the Koreans' cooperation at the Games.

Although South Korea has been a trenchant supporter of Trump's campaign of "maximum pressure" against North Korea, Moon has been keen to use the Olympics to pry open the door to better relations with its adversary. Officials in Tokyo believe Pyongyang is trying to drive a wedge between the U.S. and its two allies, and fear that Mr Moon - a known pacifist - will rush headlong into talks with the North.

The discussions from Saturday's meeting weren't immediately released.

Prior to the opening ceremony on Friday night, Pence arrived late to a dinner reception between the two Koreas and greeted everyone at a main table except for Kim Yong Nam, North Korea's nominal head of state, Reuters reports.

The Olympic Opening ceremony is one of the most controlled security events there is.

The officials toasted with the Korean liquor "soju" and were served buckwheat and potato pancakes, dried pollock soup, grilled halibut and other dishes. The North Korean orchestra will return home on Monday after their second and last performance on Sunday. Seventeen North Korean taekwondo practitioners followed next, showing powerful moves.

On Friday, the Olympics opening ceremony began with athletes from the rivaling countries marching together under a flag representing the unification of North and South Korea; President Moon described the games as a "festival and celebration of peace".
