When Rocky River native Red Gerard won the gold medal in men's Olympic slopestyle snowboarding, many were surprised the 17-year-old did so well in an event stacked with talent. The 17-year-old Gerard, the youngest in the competition, landed a flawless backside triple cork 1440 on his final run and despite Parrot landing the same trick on the final run of the day the judges favoured the American.

Redmond Gerard of the United States wins the gold medal.

Gerard won gold in slopestyle, a challenging event based on the creative spins and moves of X Games athletes along with the athleticism required in any Olympic sport.

Canadian athletes came close, but failed to reach the podium on the first day medals were handed out in South Korea.

Gerard's second run earned just a 57.11, but his finals status was all but confirmed after the first run.

In March, McMorris was riding in the backcountry near Whistler, British Columbia, when he went off a jump and crashed into a tree, resulting in a broken jaw, broken left arm, ruptured spleen, a pelvic fracture, rib fractures and a collapsed lung.

Known for his innovative rail tricks, his line was one of the most imaginative of the day. McMorris took third after putting up a score of 85.20 in his second run.

"It feels incredible. I'm just really happy that I got to land a run and I'm just really excited right now", Gerard said.

Red Gerard, born on June 29, 2000, celebrated a storming win in slopestyle, which also made him the second youngest individual victor in Games history.

Canadians Tyler Nicholson and Sebastien Toutant placed 7th and 11th respectively.
