Joaquin Phoenix In Talks To Star As Infamous DC Comics Super Villain

Joaquin Phoenix In Talks to Play The Joker In DC/Warner Bros. Standalone Movie Joaquin Phoenix circling The Joker role in origins film

This wouldn't be Phoenix's first foray into the DC film universe.

The Hangover director Todd Phillips is working on a Joker origin movie and has selected the Walk the Line actor as his top choice, with sources telling Variety that he met with Phoenix in late 2017 and the actor has agreed to the role.

For those who have enjoyed Jared Leto's portrayal of the character in Suicide Squad, be not afraid, as the standalone WB film will not make any links to Leto's version of the clown crime lord in the DC universe according to insiders, regardless of who is ultimately chosen for the role.

Joaquin Phoenix is now up to play Joker in a standalone origin movie said to be set in the 1980s. Taking into account the pace at which Warner Bros.is treating the project, it may take a couple of years or more. This shouldn't be too surprising given the Joker's stature as one of the best villains of fiction (as well as a box office draw considering what he and Harley Quinn did for the otherwise toxically received Suicide Squad).

Phillips is on board to co-write and direct the movie. He was asked by Marvel to play the Hulk in The Avengers and was approached again for the titular role of Doctor Strange.

Apparently, Warner Bros. plans to "expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters". He urged director Phillips to contact him, writing, "Todd". Will Joaquin Phoenix follow through with the role?

And while Phoenix has turned down several other comic book cinematic roles including Lex Luthor in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", according to Variety, it would seem that he is keen to experiment with the Joker's character. Gus Van Sant's film "He Won't Get Far on Foot", about a man on the road to sobriety after a life-changing accident, was the most recent movie to feature Phoenix.
