Back-To-Back: Jamie Anderson Successfully Defends Slopestyle Snowboarding Olympic Title Spencer O'Brien finishes 22nd in women's slopestyle
Frederick Owens | 12 February, 2018, 08:06

USA snowboarder Jamie Anderson won the women's snowboard slopestyle competition at the Winter Olympics in South Korea on Monday, successfully defending the gold medal she won at the Sochi Olympics in 2014. The Austrian star fell in the final and failed to clear 52.00 with either of her runs.

Only five riders made it down the first run without falling in the difficult conditions, which also included hard snow, with Anderson scoring 83.00 points to give her an nearly 10-point advantage heading into the second run. She is now tied with four other athletes as the only the snowboarders to win two gold medals at the Olympic Winter Games.

At 17 years old, Gasser may gotten a later start in snowboarding than most of her peers, but she progressed relatively quickly.

The American team will contain two star talents with huge upside who could cause a shock on Sunday.

Jamie Anderson, Hailey Langland, Jessika Jenson and Julia Marino will all be competing for Team USA in the strongest contingent that any country will send. This will be her 2nd Olympics after struggling a little bit in Sochi. Her absence leaves the global field relatively thin, with Canada's Spencer O'Brien joining Gasser as the most likely contenders to keep the United States of America from the gold medal. The 27-year-old took the top spot at the X Games in Aspen last month and appears to be peaking at just the right time.
